About Yukon Summer & Fall

Charm of Yukon Summer & Fall

Recently Yukon has been a popular destination for winter aurora viewing, but outdoors activities that can be enjoyed in the long daylight hours of summer (the midnight sun) and in beautiful vistas lit up in autumn colors in fall has also been drawing people from all over the world. Here We would like to highlight some of the charm of the Yukon in the summer and fall.

The Yukon is very famous for its mighty "Yukon River" which flows through downtown Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon Territory. The Yukon River is about 3000km long, and flows through the Yukon and Alaska. The route from Whitehorse to Dawson City is popular with canoeists who want to experience wilderness canoeing and camping along with Gold Rush history. Travelling by vehicle (motorcycle, recreational vehicle....) along the Alaska Highway is another popular way to explore the Yukon during the summer. With the return of darker evenings in the fall, is the ability to view the Aurora borealis. As early as mid to late August, this beautiful natural phenomenon can be seen while you explore a Yukon lit up with brilliant autumn colours.

1. Paddling the Yukon River:Pack up your gear and flow down the mighty River!

People from all over the world come to the Yukon in the summer to experience the vast wilderness of the North. One of the best ways to enjoy the Yukon in the summer is canoeing down the Yukon River and its many tributaries. By packing up your essential gear in your canoe and paddling and floating down the river, you will feel a deep connection to the north. You will most likely see some wildlife including moose and beavers. Fish is abundant in the rivers and anglers will enjoy catching such species as northern pike and grayling. At the end of the day, you can pitch your tent and allow sounds of nature to lull you to sleep.

2. Outdoor Camping:Back to the Basics!

Camping in the summer in the Yukon is very popular for locals and tourists alike. There are mainly two styles to enjoy camping in Yukon.
  • 1.Camping in the Wilderness.
  • 2.Camping in the Yukon Government Campground. Some Territorial Parks require over-night reservations and permits for backcountry campsites. Early reservations online are recommended to ensure availability.
Wilderness camping is held in places where there are no man-made facilities. Whether by canoe or on foot, you can look for a suitable campsite in the wilderness. The scenic river banks and the lake side are popular spots to camp. If you plan to camp in the wilderness, be sure to check out this Yukon government website to ensure your safety: http://www.env.gov.yk.ca/camping-parks/wildernesstravel.php. For people who have never done it, wilderness camping may feel a little inconvenient at first, but after a few days of spending time in grand nature, your body will start to be in sync with the rhythm of the environment and you will actually feel liberated.
Camping at established campgrounds or RV parks are also good ways to enjoy nature in the Yukon. Yukon government campgrounds are all over the Yukon and you can enjoy staying at one of them after a good day of scenic driving. (Yukon Government Campground Map) At these campground, basic facilities are available such as firewood, cooking shacks and outhouses. There are RV parks and other private campgrounds as well and they usually have water and electricity hook ups too, so for those who need these services, these places may be more suitable.

3. Camping Gear and Outdooor Clothing:Get Ready for Camping!

One of the joys of camping is to choosing the camping gear you like best. Wearing proper outdoor clothing, like rain gear, is important to stay warm and dry. Avoid cottons and instead wear underclothing that dries quickly. Even though the temperature in the summer in the Yukon can go up to plus 20°C to 30°C in the daytime, at night, temperature can go down quickly to around 5°C or so. If you love fishing, be sure to bring your favourite fishing gear. If you love watching wildlife, having binoculars and/or a scope will certainly enhance your joy of wildlife/bird viewing.

4. Camp Cooking:Incorporating wild and healthy food into camping food!

On the tours we offer, tNt Nature Connections makes use of what nature provides as well as many foods as possible we can purchase locally as a part of our meal plan. If we are paddling down the river, we will fish for northern pike or grayling. In the summer season when wild flowers are blooming, we may collect fireweed or wild rose petals to add to salad greens. We may have opportunities to collect labrador tea leaves, or spruce tips to make wild herb teas. In the fall, we will collect wild blueberries and crowberries to add to pancake mix that we grill over the fire and then top with locally made Yukon birch syrup. For those who love specialty organic stores, Whitehorse has a few good small stores that you can purchase food from. There is a farmer's market in Whitehorse once a week in the summer and you can buy handmade jams and bread as well as fresh vegetables from the local farmers! If you would like to try Northern meats, some stores sell bison and elk and a local fish shop sells Alaskan seafood that was caught in nearby Haines, Alaska. For those who like to drink, there are two local breweries in Whitehorse where you can taste beer and Yukon made spirits. There are also larger grocery stores in Whitehorse where a variety of choices of food to purchase can be made.
